Cable & Wireless, Jamaica’s only full service telecommunications provider today announced drastic reductions in the price of its High Speed Internet service with prices starting at US$29.95 a month.
The announcement was made by CWJ’s CEO, Rodney Davis as he spoke at the opening of his company’s Horizon 2005 Technology showcase at the National Arena.
Describing broadband as “the technology of the future”, Davis said Cable & Wireless intends to be “the driving force behind the deployment of broadband in Jamaica”.
Currently gaining popularity worldwide, broadband technology allows users to browse the Internet at speeds as much as 30 times faster than a dial up connection. Business and technology experts predict that wide scale use of the technology can fuel economic growth, drive technological innovation and improve the delivery of social services such as health care and education.
International consulting firm KPMG recently declared that in the current knowledge-based economy, broadband is fast becoming as important as roads and railways to national infrastructure.
Endorsing this view, Davis said, “ From Europe, to North America to Asia, countries are pushing for full-scale adoption of broadband because they recognize its enormous potential for macro-economic benefits and GDP growth.”
However, Davis also pointed out that in countries where the use of broadband was not spreading rapidly, price has been identified as the major deterrent. He said however, that Cable & Wireless is determined that the technology will be affordable to all those who want to have it.
